Narrative Discourse - Gerard Genette

Narrative Discourse: An Essay in Method - GĂ©rard Genette

I was expecting to find this deadly boring, but actually it was quite interesting. Lots of technical jargon, though - "paralepsis", "syllepsis", "iterative narrative", "oh come on, now you're just making this up" - so it does require quite intense concentration. And I hadn't read any Proust, which is what Genette uses as example and illustration, so that was a definite drawback. But it was helpful, I think.
