The Consolation of Philosophy - Boethius

Urgh. I really do not like reading philosophy. It annoys me that I cannot argue with the author when I disagree with him.
The Consolation of Philosophy was written by Boethius in 532 when he was under house arrest, about to be executed. In it, he struggles to come to terms with the existence of evil, the nature of providence, and the existence of free will.
This was my impression of the book:
Boethius: How can free will exist AND God be omniscient?
Lady Philosophy: Because God. He is ineffable.
Boethius: Why does evil exist if God is benevolent and omnipotent?
Lady Philosophy: Because God. He is ineffable.
Boethius: Why, thank you, Lady Philosophy, you have solved all my philosophical woes at a stroke.
This is just lazy thinking, isn't it? How on earth did Boethius ever become so popular?
